Installation time for Oracle 10g Enterprise edition (660 MB unzipped) on Windows XP: 4 minutes.
Result Oracle directory (no sample databases) 903 MB.

Mmmh. Thanks. I got it. Installing Oracle on a DHCP system:

  • It’s stupid
  • It causes mysterious, intermittent errors
  • The Oracle documentation specifically says not to

I have 4 network adapters installed and the MS LoopBack Adapter (which fakes the static IP) has the same DNSHostName as my original system hcp://system/netdiag/dglogs.htm (This HCP link works only from IE - start the NETWORK Diagnostics). Setting the ORACLE_HOSTNAME in the system environment variables does not help either, because of the DNSHostName.

Installing Oracle on Windows XP 32-bit may result in this freakin error:

The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.

Checking Network Configuration requirements ...

Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned IP addresses; However, before you can do this, you must configure the Microsoft LoopBack Adapter to be the primary network adapter on the system. See the Installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP.

Solution: Microsoft LoopBack Adapter

Oracle, or Miracle or overkill? Using batch files for starting 15,049 files in 2,029 folders, for a raw installation without any sample database? Eating 650 MEGAByte of valuable Windows 32-bit memory for nothing, just hanging around resident in memory? Or is it the firewall hardened MS WINXP which refuses to work with Oracle? We will know soon, maybe switch to LINUX... or we ask the Oracle...

General Solution:Install Oracle into a virtual machine using LINUX or on a separate machine with separate IP adresses using linux. Thank you!
